Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. For 2015, John Roger, Rowland Taylor and Bishop John Hooper's martyrdom, burned at the stakes. Books of the month. 2 January 1937 A.D. The will of Princeton’s titan, Mr. (Rev. Dr. Prof.) J. Gresham Machen

2 January 1937 A.D. The will of Princeton’s titan, Mr. (Rev. Dr. Prof.) J. Gresham Machen.

Dr. Machen’s Will

I spent some time copying more articles from THE PRESBYTERIAN today, over at Concordia Theological Seminary. Located some valuable articles from the years 1928, 1929 and 1937.  I hope to post many of those here in the near future. It is exhausting work, standing at a copier all day! So, recuperating this evening, here is a short piece published not long after the death of J. Gresham Machen.

DR. MACHEN’S WILL
[The Presbyterian 107.3 (21 January 1937): 4.]

The Rev. Dr. J. Gresham Machen left half his considerable estate to Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia. Giving $10,000 outright to the seminary, Dr. Machen provided that half of the balance, after certain bequests to his brothers and others were cared for, should be placed in the hands of five trustees to be held for the benefit of Westminster Seminary. Ten per cent of the residuary estate will go to the Independent Board. The will was drawn in 1935, before the establishing of The Presbyterian Guardian and before the organization of the new Church. The gross estate is estimated at $175,000.
