The 3 houses which received regular alms were Oxford,
Cambridge, and Berwick-on-Tweed. 'Perpetual alms' and the enforcement of
gifts through the law-courts were forbidden by the General Chapter of 1260,
and the prohibition was repeated in 1292, 1316, 1331, and 1354: Quarrachi, Bonaventurae
Op. Omn. viii, 466; Archiv. Fran. Hist. ii, 418, iv, 281, vi,
59-60; Bullar. Fran. vi, 641. The Oxford friars in the 15th century
had no hesitation in appealing to the law-courts: Little, The Grey Friars
in Oxford, 99.
