Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. For 2015, John Roger, Rowland Taylor and Bishop John Hooper's martyrdom, burned at the stakes. Books of the month. Rev Prof Alister McGrath accepts Professorship at Oxford University

New Andreas Idreos Professor in Science and Religion at Oxford Univeristy  |  15th Nov 2013

Wycliffe warmly congratulates Rev Prof Alister McGrath on his recent appointment as the new Andreas Idreos Professorship in Science and Religion at the University of Oxford. Prof McGrath started as a tutor at Wycliffe in 1983 and was Principal from 1995-2004. He is now the President of the Oxford Center for Christian Apologetics, which is a partnership between Wycliffe Hall and Ravi Zacharias International Ministries Europe.

The Idreos Professorship is a highly interdisciplinary chair devoted to research and teaching in (i) questions raised for Theology by the natural and human and social sciences (including moral and social questions), and (ii) the impact of Theology on the natural, human and social sciences. The post was held previously by Prof John Brooke and, most recently, Prof Peter Harrison. Prof McGrath will take up his new post on 1 April 2014.

Principal of Wycliffe Hall, Revd Dr Michael Lloyd comments:

I am delighted that Alister will be ‘homing’ to Oxford. Oxford will be much the richer for his return, despite the risk of significant local de-forestation as a result of his legendary productivity! Having a doctorate in Molecular Biophysics as well as being a hugely respected theologian, he is almost uniquely equipped to be Andreas Idreos Professor in Science and Religion, and to work in an area of research that has historically been so high-profile at Oxford. In his capacity as President of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, we look forward very much to his continuing teaching at Wycliffe Hall. We congratulate him warmly, and hope to see a great deal of him and Joanna.
